What Masvingo Mayor did is ‘unforgivable’, Chamisa says

MDC Alliance leader Nelson Chamisa has refused to let Masvingo city mayor Collen Maboke off the hook saying the party’s decision compelling him to step down after he orchestrated a palace coup on the preferred mayoral candidate stands.

Chamisa said the party’s decision stands and expressed shock that Maboke had not resigned.

“He has not resigned? I was told he complied by the party’s decision to have him step down because he was not our candidate.

“Nothing is going to change and I am going to find out what is going on because we cannot be having the same issue over and over again.

“What Maboke did is unforgivable and we will not let it go just like that, he has to step down,” said Chamisa.

The MDC Alliance constitution gives Chamisa the exclusive power to appoint mayors but the alliance leader chose a consultative approach by asking all the interested candidates to submit CVs and come for interviews.

Maboke and councillor Godfrey Kurauone of Ward 4 were called for interviews and Kurauone came out victorious.

Unhappy with the decision, Maboke connived with Zanu PF councillors for their support in a deal which saw the latter getting the deputy mayoral post despite having only three councillors out of ten.

Service delivery has suffered as a result of the power struggles in the council chambers with other councillors pulling in opposite direction to that of Maboke whom they believe is a ZANU  PF stooge.

Maboke, who is also a lawyer, could not be drawn into commenting as his mobile was not available since he sometimes spend most of the times at court.
