Is ED about to promote Sydney Sekeramayi?

FORMER Defence as well as State Security Minister Sydney Sekeramayi, who in the last days of Robert Mugabe’s rule was touted as an alternative to a Mnangagwa presidency, was yesterday allowed to sit at the front table with President Emmerson Mnangagwa at the heroes’ acre burial of the late Brigadier-General Emilio Munemo.

Sekeramayi, just like Mnangagwa himself, was a permanent feature of Mugabe’s successive Cabinets since independence in 1980. Jonathan Moyo of the G40 faction of ZANU-PF threw the cat among the pigeons when he suggested that Sekeramayi was the best-placed to succeed Mugabe, a statement that angered the Lacostes and the military component led at the time by now Vice President Constantino Chiwenga.

Sekeramayi was former President Robert Mugabe’s preferred successor before the military coup that scuppered the plans and thrust Mnangagwa into the hot seat after a delicate week during which the former then Zanu PF leader was placed under house arrest in November 2017 before he was forced to resign under duress. Sekeramayi has not played any significant role in national politics since then.

Munemo (64), who was the director-general civil military relations at the Zimbabwe Defence Forces (ZDF), died last Sunday after what authorities said was a long illness.

It could be that Sekeramayi, cool as he has always been, is not regarded as a threat and power-schemer by the Mnangagwa administration.

Or it could be that bigger things are i store for him, thanks to ED. We shall see.
