PICS: Men caught ‘tempering’ with Chamisa lawyer’s car wheels

EXILED former Zanu-PF propagandist Jonathan Moyo has released grainy images of what he says are mysterious men caught tempering with the tyres of a car belonging to prominent Harare lawyer Advocate Thabani Mpofu in a parking basement in Harare.

Thabani Mpofu, who has recently represented both President Emerson Mnangagwa and MDC leader Nelson Chamisa, had a road accident last month in Muzarabani in which he refused to rule out foul play.

A lawyer who was driving out of the basement car park of The Chambers in Harare took the images on Tuesday this week.

He became suspicious after leaving Mpofu’s office only to find a man in a blue work suit apparently performing some mechanical procedure on the front left side of Mpofu’s Land Rover Discovery.

Thabani Mpofu had a lucky escape in Muzarabani in this accident which occurred on a Saturday afternoon in June. He and his driver escaped with minor injuries, but were trapped in the wreckage for a while.

“I drove round and came back a second time. Now I could clearly see three men doing something to the car, I can’t be sure what,” the lawyer was quoted by ZimLive.

He preferred to remain anonymous.

The incident, coming after Mpofu survived a car crash in a different vehicle on June 15 last month, will spark serious security concerns among lawyers representing the opposition and human rights campaigners who have been reporting increased state repression and impunity.

According to reports, the Land Rover Discovery has since been taken to experts for further examinations. Reports also indicated the vehicle which was involved in the Muzarabani accident in June, a Toyota Landcruiser, is still being examined.

According to ZimLive, Advocate Thabani Mpofu said a check with Old Mutual, who own the building where the basement is located, said no workmen entered the basement on the day in question.

Commenting on the images, some social media followers of Professor Jonathan Moyo said while foul play could not be ruled out, the images provided were too grainy to reveal anything.

What do you see?… Some say the images do not show anything at all.

Others however felt Thabani Mpofu needs to be extra cautious as he has represented victims of State brutality before.
